Job Summary: 

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Director of Quality Engineering to lead a diverse, smart and driven team of Software Development Engineers in Test (SDET) and managers focused on functional testing, load / performance testing and automation framework development.

The position requires an experienced engineering and thought leader with the right mix of relevant experience and skills, an ability to flex between the strategic and the tactical, outstanding verbal and written communication skills, a high level of energy and flexibility to get things done and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented product development environment. The ideal person for this role will be someone who understands the art and science of testing for mission critical, cloud scale enterprise SaaS and is an inspirational leader who embodies BlackLine’s leadership principles of leading by example, communicating openly, enabling and inspiring others, exceling with partners, acting decisively, and collaborating effectively. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Define and implement long-term QE strategy in partnership with engineering, product, Ops and customer support leaders. 
  • Institute a ‘quality first’ approach throughout the SDLC and be a customer advocate.  
  • Foster a culture of Continuous Delivery (CD) and efficiency by “automating everything automatable” and using automation day in and day out. 
  • Lead the day-to-day activities of the SDET teams in an Agile/Scrum environment. 
  • Take part in feature planning and design reviews, to contribute your ideas and to ensure testability. 
  • Build, enhance and maintain automation platform and tools. 
  • Exercise sound judgment, discretion, and timeliness in decision making. 
  • Communicate quantitative and qualitative quality metrics and risks to stakeholders. 
  • Attract, retain, motivate and grow talent. 
  • Promote continuous improvements within your team through feedback and mentoring.

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline; MS preferred.  
  • 12+ years of software engineering design and testing experience with a proven track record of enterprise class SaaS delivery, paired with increasing responsibility in technical and strategic roles. 
  • 8+ years of hands-on technical leadership experience 
  • 5+ years of management experience managing a team of 20+ engineers 
  • Good understanding of all aspects of software development, quality engineering, automation tools and monitoring in a large-scale enterprise environment. 
  • Experience with continuous integration, test pipelines, load testing and automation. 
  • Deep understanding of what it takes to effectively implement and utilize test automation. 
  • Extraordinary engineering vision, data focus, and customer advocacy orientation. 
  • Experience with leading the everyday activities of a global teams using Agile/Scrum processes. 
  • Works well under pressure and is able to shift priorities as needed. 
  • Passion for user experience and technical efficiency. 
  • Experience with the public cloud (AWS, Azure, or GCP).  
  • Experience in hiring, training, mentoring, and managing multiple teams.  
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation, listening, and negotiation skills, with ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner. 
  • Strategic thinker with ability to roll up sleeves to get things done.  
  • Successful track record of building strong relationships and working across the organization to influence and drive change.
